At the 333 on January 18th I set up a camera in the control room to give anyone interested in 333 Production a little idea of what goes on in the Control Room during each and every service. What you are hearing is me directing what goes on the screens. Most of the time the camera operators choose their own shots and I then choose which goes on the screen. Sometimes if we are doing “special shots” I will give a little guidance to the cameras so we can set up some nice dissolves, especially during slower songs. We still haven’t came to the point yet of doing the really cool dissolves, but we will get there soon!

In the bottom right of the screen is the Program View which is what the audience is seeing in the auditorium. The four monitors are the views each of the four cameras are getting. Camera 1- Taneshia Brown, Camera 2- Rodney Pugh, Camera 3- Daniel Usher. The person sitting in the front of the room, Amanda Hunter, is our Technical Director and she actually presses the buttons when I call out “Ready 1, Take 1″, and she is doing a fantastic job at a high stress position! To the right of her is our Lyrics Operator, Kimberly Tench, and she is responsible for keeping the lyrics on the screen and timed with the songs (which is very hard trying to follow what is going on in the auditorium from the control room). To the right and off the image is our Video Playback Operator, Kylie Ashemore, who is responsible for playing all videos as well as running the lyrics for the Plasma Screen which the Band uses. Also to the right, and off screen, is our Script Supervisor, Chris Baker, who keeps us in line with what is coming next.

First Service– Amazing!

To all of the Production Volunteers who poured their time, creativity and talents into making the first 333 Service a success thank you! We may never know the lives that were impacted during the service but we know that God is using us to impact them! This was truly a success beyond what I had imagined a few weeks ago! You all pulled together and helped to make the entire service a success. From cameras to lighting to graphics and video everything was great! Every position from Production Director to Grip to Lighting was vital to the success of the service and none of it would have been possible without you!

I’m posting a few of the songs from the service so you can see what it looked like! There are obviously some things that need to be worked on, but that will come later, for today enjoy watching your work! Take note of things you like and things you’d like to change!

First of all thank you to everyone who was able to make the meeting yesterday! I think we were able to cover a lot of material and Eric also did a great job sharing the vision behind the 333 Service! Hopefully you came away from it as excited as we are about the service! Our main goal is not simply for you to show up and work at the service, but for you to use your passions, skills, talents and creativity to really add something to the experiance of the people whom God will be sending through our doors! I am including the two documents that were given out yesterday. One is the 333 Production Team Mission, Goals and Commitments and the other is the Production Team Form. I’d like everyone to fill out the form and bring it back next weekend. It will give me a little more of an idea of where to plug you into the service and what areas you can contirbute the best as well as what areas we can help you “unleash” your creativity!

Be thinking over the next three weeks on what you can do in your specific role to really bring something new and different.

Important Meeting

Hey Everyone,
We will be having a meeting Sunday Morning immediately following the 11am service for anyone interested in working with 333 Production. Please make plans to attend as this will be a time for you to find out what all is going on and in what ways you can serve on the 333 Production Staff. We also want to get an idea of your schedules and what times you can commit to the service. The meeting will take place in the Ladies Classroom which is located right beside the Harvest Classroom. If you don’t know where either of these are, go to the back hallway where all the classrooms are following service and someone will be there to guide you!

Please tell anyone you think may be interested in working with us about this meeting! As stated previously we are going to need a large number of Production Volunteers to share their talents, gifts, creativity, passion and time to make this a service that reaches the Technical Excellence we are praying for!

If you are unable to make this meeting but wish to help or find out more, please notify me as soon as possible.

I look forward to meeting with you all and working with you all come January 4th!

Camera Training- Anticipation

I know I’ve visited this video before in the On The Horizon post with several video examples of what I hope 333 Production to look like (if you haven’t yet checked those example out, head on over after this post to see some Fast Songs) but today I want to go a little more in depth with it.

This is a perfect example of a slow song and how I hope ours to look. The main thing I want everyone to notice on this video is the way the camera operators anticipate their next shot. By anticipate I mean that they are constantly aware of what is on the screen and what is coming up to be in the right place at the right time. Notice that how when the lead singer is in the right side of the screen the next shot will have her in the left side of the screen. This makes for some amazing transition and slow dissolves between shots. This will come with experience as we grow, but the main thing is while you are picking your shot take a look at the screen and notice what the other camera has framed up then compliment it. Occasionally the director may set up these shots by telling you where to be, but most times it is up to the camera operators to let their creativity flow in making amazing videos!

Also notice the movemement on most shots. All of them include at least a little bit of movement. My favorites are where she is in the left side of the shot then the next shot fades in and they are slowly bringing her in from the right so she is “sweeping” into the screen. Notice also the loss of focus when some shots go off the screen. This will happen when you hear the director say “Ready 1…. Fade 1″ When you hear “Fade 1″ and you are on, go ahead and start losing focus. Granted you can’t do this on every shot but when you properly it is truly an amazing effect!

Head Room, Nose Room, Rule of Thirds… What?

Video Framing

Today I’m going to look at some basic video framing techniques for our camera operators.

The first rule is the rule of proper head room. What you want to do is have the camera framed (for most shots… this rule can be broken on creative shots) where the top of the head is near the top of the image. If you leave to much head room the subject appears small on screen, to little and their head extends beyond the frame making it hard for the viewer to decide how tall the subject is!

Nose Room (Or Lead Room)- This rule deals with the side of the frame the subject is looking at, or walking towards. When the look to the left you want to increase the room on the left so they don’t look boxed in by the frame and vice versa for the right side of the frame.

Rule of Thirds- For this rule you divide the screen up both vertically and horizontally into thirds. Then you place the subject on one of these lines to create more dynamic framing. Very few times to you place the subject directly in the center of the shot, especially in worship sets. Speaking parts will vary however, but you still want the subjects eye lines to be on the upper third.

Take a look at this video. Some of the key points are the fourth shot (the close up on the band leader). Notice the way he is placed on the left “third” of the screen and has the perfect amount of room above his head. I really like this close up and plan to use it often during the service on Praise and Worship. Also notice the rack focus (loss of focus) as the shot dissolves away. This is something the camera operator will do. When you hear the director say “Fade One” or something similar you will begin rolling your camera out of focus. Not on every shot but when you feel it is appropriate.

Simple yet Powerful Lighting

Here is a great example of using lighting for a slow song that is amazing. I love the solo lighting on the lead in the beginning then the slow build up of the lighting till the end when it returns to a solo lighting on him. I would have liked to of seen a little more build up on the “My Chains are Gone” part, maybe some white light washing the stage… building the emotion. Excuse the audio, it looks like it was recorded with a handheld picture camera. Just an example:
